My Sanctuary

I was sitting outside last night downing the last of my 64 ounces of water for the day when I realized something had been nagging me all day. It took me a couple of moments, but I figured it out.

Now that I had a blog, what was I going to do with it?
I had over the last several days viewed other blogs and sensed that each one had its own common thread that held them together, despite how diverse the artist might be. What was mine? What did I want from this blog? Where did I want it to go? It reminded me of a favorite book I once had, ‘What’s it all about Charlie Brown?’
Indeed, what is this all about?
I thought about the name of my blog and started there.

Sanctuary: refuge: a safe place, especially for people being persecuted.
A place where wildlife is protected: a place or area of land where wildlife is protected
from predators and from being destroyed or hunted by human beings. A bird sanctuary.

I had grown up on the rim of a bird sanctuary. It was my home away from home. My retreat. Where I went and sketched for hours.

Sketches: Pictures done quickly and roughly, without concern for detail.
May be done to capture the general mood of a scene, or to help the artist work out an idea for a finished composition.

The sanctuary of my youth was a brief 3/10 of a mile from my front door. All I needed were pen, paper and good hiking boots. So easy, so simple.
Over the years I’ve watched debilitating diseases careen through lives, destroying personal and family sanctuaries, then hurrying on to other victims.
Like many. I’ve had nights of despair fearing that morning would never come, and then nights when I prayed it wouldn’t.
Last night when I walked through my studio, I saw a life in mid stroke. Projects of the heart I hadn’t followed through on. A crisis here, a tragedy there. I could just as well write my bio from what I failed to finish as to write it from those things I did. Many wonderful projects set aside for better days . . .
So, I want Sanctuary sketches to be about re-finding my sanctuary. A place of retreat when the hazards of life come barreling through. To be able to finish the projects I once started and still believe in; and also to have the courage to follow new dreams.
I want to be the person God intended me to be.
To keep this foremost in my thoughts I plan to post my projects as I finish them along with new ones I create. I commit to myself-- to be myself. Please wish me luck!

No earth shattering discoveries tonight just the realization that my sanctuary is still where it always was- within me. I just have to enter.

Thanks to those who took the time to read this lengthy post, I wish you well.

Oh Caren, so glad you are back and hopefully much better - your sanctuary is lovely and Yes it is within us all but oh so hard to find sometimes. Stay well!

This is a beautiful pastel (?) sketch of trees turning colour. We don't normally get much of that here on the West Coast, but this year we're beginning to see a little bit of it.
It seems very fitting to illustrate a turning of sorts in your personal discovery. Sometimes we can't find our own inner peace, our sanctuary because we are so sure it is somewhere else, when it's within us and accessible any time we want.
Happy traails through the woods and to new discoveries!!

Caren, these trees are so lovely! --- a forest sanctuary of peace. Sorry to hear about the ruptured disc -- may you find complete healing!
I had to laugh when I saw Jer. 29:11 on your blog: the Lord keeps bringing this verse before me as a reminder! Also your comment on becoming the person God intended you to be: the same is my blog's subtitle:

All His blessings on you!

These are all wonderful questions to ponder and great goals to set - for all of us. I look forward to seeing the work you produce as part of your daily search for your personal sanctuary.

This is my devotional for today, and thought about you after reading it. Hope this is ok:

Imitators of God

Today's Scripture

“Therefore be imitators of God (copy Him and follow His example), as well-beloved children (imitate their father). And walk in love…” (Ephesians 5:1-2a AMP.)

Today's Word from Joel and Victoria

When people look at you, do they see your family resemblance? Perhaps in the natural, you have characteristics of your father or mother; maybe you have their eyes, or mouth or mannerisms. But we should also have the characteristics of our heavenly Father. We should display His likeness. We should have His eyes, His mouth and His mannerisms, too. We should study Him and imitate Him with the same awe that little children do as they imitate their earthly fathers.

The Bible tells us that God is love. We are never more like God than when we are walking in love—when we are being patient and kind; when we are extending grace and mercy and forgiving others the way Christ has forgiven us. When you imitate God, when you do things His way, you get His results! And God’s ways always lead to life, freedom and blessing. The more you imitate your heavenly Father by walking in love, the more you will see Him moving in your life. He’ll open doors for you that no man can close, and you’ll see His hand of blessing in every area of your life!

A Prayer for Today

Father in heaven, I invite Your love to flow through me today. Show me how I can be a blessing to others and follow Your ways. Let my life please You so that I can be an example of Your awesome character. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
